DANDRUFF

SYMPTOMS

• Flakes of skin that ranges from small and white to large, greasy, and yellow.

• Itchy flaking that appears on the scalp or eyebrows, or around the hairline, ears, or nose.

WHAT IS DANDRUFF

Dandruff those dry, white flakes of skin you constantly find yourself brushing off your collar or shoulders typically pose no health risk whatsoever. But it can be a source of embarrassment, and the itchiness that may come with it is a genuine nuisance. Many people incorrectly assume that the problem has something to do with hygiene and how often you wash your hair. Although it’s true that shampooing infrequently can aggravate an existing case of dandruff, it will not bring one on. What actually lies behind dandruff is a simple difference between people in a natural process we all undergo every day: shedding skin cells. The difference is that some of us shed more than others.

CAUSES

Skin cells that grow and die off too fast are the cause of dandruff, but doctors do not know why this happens. Some people with severe flaking have overactive sebaceous glands; others have an elevated level of the fungus PITYROSPORUM OVALE, which is present in most people but to excess in dandruff suffers. Other causative factors include family history, food allergies, excessive sweating, and use of alkaline soaps, yeast infections, and stress. Even the season of the year can contribute to the problem: cold, dry winters are notorious for bringing on dandruff or making it worse. If dandruff flakes are greasy and yellow, the probable cause is the skin condition known as seborrhea dermatitis; dry, thick lesions consisting of large, silvery scales may be traced to the less common psoriasis of the scalp. These forms of dandruff as well as the run of the mill variety become a hazard only if you scratch to the point of causing breaks in the skin, which can place you at greater risk for infections, particularly from staff and strep bacteria.

TREATMENT

Many over the counter shampoos can keep moderate dandruff in check, but consult your doctor about more stubborn forms such as seborrhea dermatitis. Some herbal remedies may relieve the itching and dryness, but it usually takes a tar based product to subdue the greasy scales. The U.S food and drug administration has approved only five active ingredients as safe and effective for treating dandruff: coal tar preparations, PYRITHOINE ZINC, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, and sulfur. All other substance has been banned as active ingredients in dandruff shampoos, so read the label.

CONVENTIONL MEDICINE

If you find that you are still scratching and shedding after trying over the counter preparations, see your doctor. You may be using the wrong shampoo for your condition. For really stubborn dandruff cases you may need to use a prescription steroid lotion. Most doctor recommend that dandruff sufferers use a medicated shampoo daily, leaving the lather on for at least 10 minutes. Be sure to rinse thoroughly; shampoo and soap residue can actually aggravate skin problems. After your dandruff has cleared up, use the medicated shampoo no more than once or twice a week, because it is too harsh for daily use. When possible, let your hair dry naturally instead of blowing it dry. Brushing your hair with a natural bristle brush can also prove beneficial. Brush your hair from your scalp outward with steady, firm strokes. This will carry oil from your scalp, where it can cause dandruff, along the hair strands, which need the oil to stay shiny and healthy.

ALTERNATIVE CHOICES

In addition to herbal preparations, other alternative potions including a careful diet, stress reducing mind/ body exercises, and massage may prove to be of some benefit in treating dandruff.

HERBAL THERAPIES

To prevent flaking and protect against infection, try massaging Tea Tree oil. Into your scalp. Some practitioners believe it is as effective as prescription steroid creams. Dried Thyme, or Sage may taken an effective rinse. Boil 2 heaping tbsp of one of these herbs in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Strain and cool. Pour the liquid on damp, clean hair and massage it into your scalp.

MIND/ BODY MEDICINE

Stress may aggravate dandruff. Regular exercise is not only good for your overall health but is also one of the most effective ways to relieve stress. you might also consider adding a relaxation techniques such as yoga to your weekly routine.

NUTRITION AND DIET

Dandruff is a common symptoms of food allergies, often resulting from a cumulative effect that can make it somewhat difficult to identify the source of the allergic reaction. For example, you drink milk every day and never think to associate that with the thickening scales on your head. If standard dandruff treatments don’t seem to be working for you, try cutting fatty foods, dairy products, excessive sugar, and seafood out of your diet. Supplement of vitamins, such as biotin, thiamine, niacin, and coalmine, may help eliminate dandruff by improving your body ability to break down fatty acids.
