SYMPTOMS

• Persistent or recurrent diarrhea with blood or pus in the stool.

• Abdominal pain.

• Bowel movements or diarrhea during the night.

• Fever, fatigue, weakness, weight loss, pains or soreness in joints.

WHAT IS COLITIS

Colitis is general term for inflammatory ailments of the lower intestine, which include Cohn’s disease and chronic alternative prostates. Ischemic colitis is an intestinal disorder that affects mainly the elderly. One of the most serious forms of colitis is ulcerative colitis, a chronic disease that requires close medical attention. In ulcerative colitis, the colon develops tiny ulcers and other inflammations that flare up periodically and cause attacks of bloody stools or diarrheal that may be painful. It is usually diagnose in young adults but can occurs at any age, and may be associated with various other disorders ranging from eye problems to arthritis in the arm and leg joints. Attacks of alterative colitis tend to recur, and the risk of colorectal cancer increases rapidly 8 to 10 years after onset. With regular medical treatment, however, the disease is rarely fatal, and most suffers can lead fairly normal lives. Doctors recognize several levels of severity:

With a mild case you will have up to four loose, possibly bloody, bowel movements a day, which may temporarily relieve abdominal pain.

With a moderate case you will have abdominal pain and four to eight bloody stools daily; as well as a low fever and weight loss.

With a severe case you will have six or more bloody stools or diarrheal daily and during the night, with fever of 1000F or higher, as well as symptoms of anaemia.

CAUSES

Although several theories have been put forward about the causes of colitis, none has been proved conclusively. Colitis like symptoms can also occur in conjunction with bacterial and parasitic infections, such as salmonella poisoning. Temporary colitis like symptoms strike some people after they take certain antibiotics, such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalosporins, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, lincomycin, penicillin, tetracycline, or trimethoprim. When drugs are discontinued, the symptoms tend to disappear.

DIAGNOSTIC AND TEST PROCEDURES

Doctors look for signs of ulcerative colitis by examining the inside of the colon with a sigmoidoscope, a flexible tube inserted through the rectum. A diagnosis is often made by taking a biopsy, removing a tiny sample of the colon lining for testing under the microscope.

TREATMENT

Ulcerative colitis is among the most serious systematic illness. If left untreated, it can lead to complications in other body system and is potentially fatal. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate medical treatment are essential. Diarrheal in infants and young children is always a serious matter and must be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible.

CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE

Doctors first focus on controlling inflammation and stopping diarrheal, and eventually on improving nutrition. If you have intense diarrheal and bleeding, your doctor will probably recommend immediate hospitalization, intravenous feeding, and treatment with appropriate drugs probably intravenous methyl prednisolone or hydrocortisone. Azathioprine, an immunosuppressant’s well. When disease is stable but diarrheal is still a problem, you may need an ant diarrheal remedy such as a loperamide and codeine compound. Because diarrheal tends to dehydrate the body, you need to replace the water you are losing. In severe cases, surgery to remove the colon may be necessary. After the immediate symptoms of colitis are under control, your doctor will probably recommend a highflier, lactose free diet and will encourage you to get regular exercise and to stop smoking.

ALTERNATIVE CHOICES

Because ulcerative colitis is a serious, potentially life threatening illness, you should see a doctor at the first sign of diarrheal with bloody stools. If the medical diagnosis rules out ulcerative or other infectious forms of colitis, however, you may find that alternative therapies are helpful in relieving your symptoms.

ACCUPUNCTURE

To provide relief from diarrheal and colitis like symptoms, your acupuncturist will ask you specific question about your condition to determine which points to stimulate. The likely points are along the foot stomach and conception meridians, near the navel and left knee.

HERBAL THERAPIES

For soothing an irritated intestine and stimulating antibacterial action, many herbalists recommend a supplemental regimen of garlic, typically one 300 mg capsule of dried garlic, three times a day with meals.

HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy is considered appropriated for relief of colitis and colitis like symptoms, not only in adults but in infants and children as well. Consult a homeopath for specific treatments; among the commonly prescribed homeopathic remedies for colitis are Arsenicum album and Nux vomica.

NUTRITION AND DIETS

Omega 3 fatty acids, found naturally in fish oil and flaxseed oil and available in capsule form at health food sores, may help reduce intestinal inflammation. Consult a knowledgeable healthcare practitioner for the dosage appropriate to your condition.

REFLEXOLOGY

In order to relive discomfort of intestinal problems, massage the colon, liver, adrenal, lower spine, diaphragm, and gallbladder areas on the bottom of your foot.
